python00b: A Journey to Learning Python - Episode 3 - Data Types and our first assignment!

I decided long ago that I wanted to teach myself a programming language, specifically Python, to eventually become capable of developing groundwater models. I purchased a book and have finally took the initiative to learn the basics. This journey will take us through the basics, but will eventually evolve into more advanced techniques as I learn and develop skills in Python. After this book, the plan is to dig into courses and tutorials from Udemy, github, automatetheboringstuff, and kaggle. This series should end up being significantly long. I hope you can learn with me on this journey to adding Python to our toolbelt!

In this episode, we cover Data Types in Python and go over the first assignment of the series. These include integers, which are positive/negative whole numbers, floats, which are positive/negative decimal numbers, and strings, which is just basically text data. We learn how to manipulate data strings, format strings, and type casting. The final portion of the episode has us write a program that assigns a numerical value to a variable and changes the value in some way, assigns a string value to some variable, prints the string and the value by using string formatting, and then converts the numerical data into a different format and prints the new data form. Don't worry, the assignment doesn't take long. Make sure you pause and write your own code before we go over the book's example.
