The Deep Web Explained

The Deep Web is one of those tech phrases that have become a buzz word that inspires both fear and confusion. This week we’ll try to help you understand what the Deep Web is and what it is not.
To understand the Deep Web, you must first understand two other things as well; the Surface Web and the Dark Web. The Surface Web are the websites that search engines return in their results lists. This includes Facebook, Google, HBO.com, and the vast majority of the sites that you may visit. They’re considered surface websites or part of the surface web because they are indexed by search engines and are designed to be accessible. Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other search engines use small scripts or programs called spiders, crawlers, or bots that go throughout the internet and report back or index the sites that it may encounter. This is what your search results consist of.
Sites that aren’t as accessible are considered as being part of the Deep Web; because it requires a bit more effort to access them and they aren’t indexed like sites that are part of the Surface Web. Sites in the Deep Web can be access by knowing the exact URL or web address for the site or it may not be publicly accessible. The Deep Web can include sites that are unindexed, database websites, private pages like Facebook posts, blog entries that have not been published, websites that aren’t linked or referred to in other websites.
The Dark Web refers networks that require special software to be installed in order to access the sites ion network. They are all overlay networks, which means that they are a gateway that uses the same internet connection as the Surface Web. Another major difference is that the anonymity is a key feature of the Dark Net. Services like The Torproject and The Freenet Project both facilitate access to the Dark Web, but anyone can create a Dark Web.
Many people use the terms Deep Web and Dark Web interchangeably and may even think of them as being interchangeable, but as you can see they’re quite distinct. They both can be a means for people to voice their concerns and truths about oppression perpetrated by the powerful by being an unregulated means of media distribution, but they can also serve as a reserve the baser elements of humanity.
