3 Short Grammar Lessons

The Second Conditional
- is for unrealistic and hypothetical situations. Things that could happen, but probably wont.
It uses the subjunctive form or tense, which looks like a past tense but isn't.

"If I won the lotto, I wouldn't be a teacher anymore!"
"If I were rich I would buy a house in my hometown."

Note: 'were' is the correct form here. Not 'was' However native English speakers also make this mistake or error, so much so that it is kind of is accepted now. Americans are famous for this. Thanks for dumbing down the grammar USA!

Past Perfect
- is kind of like a double past. Used to talk about a past event that happened before another past event.

'had' + 'past participle' = had gone, had given, had eaten, had quit, had finished etc.

"I had already driven across Canada before attempting the US."

The Third Conditional
- is the past conditional. Often used for regret or imagine and different decision or choice than the one you made. Often it's used as a complaint about the present.

"If I hadn't stayed up all night studying and I would have slept better and passed the test."

The third conditional is always the opposite of what really happened. In the previous example, what happened?

The person stayed up all night, did not sleep well, and did poorly on the test. That's regret!
