AWS Database Services -101 | Cloud With Mohsin

How you all are doing today?
In today's session we are going to discuss the database services from AWS.

First of all lets understand what is a relational database.
A relational model organizes data into one or more tables (or "relations") of columns and rows, with a unique key identifying each row.
Rows are also called records or tuples, Columns are also called attributes

Following are the various AWS database services from AWS.

a. Relational Database Service (RDS)
Managed Relational Database Service
It provides us with seven familiar database engines to choose from, including Amazon Aurora MySQL-Compatible Edition, Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL-Compatible Edition, MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server. 

b. Non-relational Database Service
A serverless database for applications that need high performance at any scale.
Amazon DynamoDB is NoSQL Database Service

c.Data Warehouse
Fast, simple, cost-effective data warehousing.
Amazon Redshift is data warehouse service from AWS

d.AWS Database Migration Service
Migrate databases with minimal downtime.

e.In-Memory Data Store
Managed, in-memory data store services that make it easy to deploy, operate, and scale popular open source compatible in-memory data stores.
Amazon ElastiCache is in-memory data store service from AWS

f.In-Memory Database
Redis-compatible, durable, in-memory database service for ultra-fast performance.
Amazon MemoryDB is in-memory database from AWS

g.Managed Document Database Service
A scalable, highly durable, and fully managed database service for operating mission-critical MongoDB.
Amazon DocumentDB is the document db service offered by AWS

In today's topic we are going to focus on Amazon relational database service (RDS)

Amazon Relational Database Service RDS is a managed relational database service that provides us with seven familiar database engines to choose from, including Amazon Aurora MySQL-Compatible Edition, Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL-Compatible Edition, MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server. 


Key Features of Amazon RDS:

a.Automated backups: Amazon RDS automatically perform the database backup and stores the same for the restoration purpose in case of database corruption or deletion etc.

b.Multi-AZ deployments: One of the key feature of Amazon RDS is it allows us to deploy the database across multiple Availability Zones (AZs) in a Region, which provides us with enhanced availability and durability.

c.Read replicas: Amazon RDS allows to create read replicas of database in other Azs. These read-replicas improve performance by offloading read traffic from your primary database.

d.Enhanced monitoring: Amazon RDS provides enhanced monitoring metrics to track database’s performance.

e.Database snapshots: We can take the snapshots of the database, which can be used to create new databases or to restore an existing database.

There are no upfront investments required and we need to pay only for the resources used.

We can not login to RDS instance. Since it is fully managed service the tasks such as patching, upgrades etc.is managed by AWS.Amazon RDS handles routine database tasks, such as provisioning, patching, backup, recovery, failure detection, and repair.
