How to Use COLUMN Function in Excel

In this Excel Function Explained video series, I will describe, how to use COLUMN function in excel. It cascades under the Lookup & Reference category. The COLUMN function will provide the number of the Column you are in. Let’s say you are in cell C3, if you use the Column function here you will get 3, because you are in Column 3. Using COLUMN function, you’ll be able to return the Column number based on which cell you are.
Let’s learn how to use COLUMN formula in excel.

The Function looks like this = COLUMN ([reference])

The COLUMN function has only one argument and that is optional.
1. Reference: This is where you provide a cell reference. It’s an optional argument. If you write the cell reference then the function will return Column number of that reference. If you don’t place any reference, it will return the Column number of the cell where you place the function.

There are a few things you need to remember when you use this function.
1. The parameter is optional here if you place a cell reverence here then it will return the Column number of that cell.
2. If you don’t place the reference, it will return the Column number of that cell where you have the function.
3. If you select a range then it will return the Column number of the first cell of your range.
This is how we use COLUMN in excel. Remember, using COLUMN function in excel you actually tell excel formula to return the Column number of the cell we specify.
