The History of java


Java was started as a project called "Oak" by James Gosling and his colleagues at Sun Microsystems in the early 1990s. Later, the project went by the name Green and was finally renamed as Java.
Java is a class-based, object-oriented programming language. It was originally designed for interactive television, but it was too advanced for the digital cable television industry at the time. It allows developers to write once, run anywhere (WORA), meaning that the compiled Java code can run on all platforms that support Java without the need for recompilation.
Java applications are typically compiled to bytecode that can run on any Java virtual machine (JVM) regardless of the underlying computer architecture.
The syntax of Java is similar to C and C++, but it has fewer low-level facilities than either of them
It was fairly secure and its security was configurable, allowing for network and file access to be limited.
Major web browsers soon incorporated the ability to run Java applets within web pages. Java is popular on the Internet because it offers Applets. Applets are tiny programs that run on the browser. This means that they inherit the strength of Java and also support graphical user interface. So surfing on the Internet becomes fun when web pages are designed with the help of applets.
Java, is used by a wide variety of computing platforms from embedded devices and mobile phones to enterprise servers and supercomputers.
Sun Microsystem released the very first version of JDK in Jan 1996. Being an open source platform, it has many distributors, like Amazon, IBM, Azul Systems, AdoptOpen JDK and many others with free and commercial support distributions(Amazon Correto, zulu, AdoptOpen JDK , liberica, etc).


in 2009 Oracle bought Sun Microsystems and owns Java. As Oracle being the committed holder of Java, it has a strong development future roadmap. The company plans to modularize the platform and to improve security and performance which enables Java to easily scale from large software systems to small devices, including embedded IoT processors.
