Create a Control Chart in Excel

Use a control chart to tell you whether your process is out of control, unstable, or not predictable. A stable process produces predictable results consistently. Processes that are "out of control" need to be investigated and stabilized before they can be improved.

This video shows you how to create a control charts in Excel using the QI Macros.


It's easy to create a Control Chart with our QI Macros software.

Simply click and drag over your data, then click on the QI Macros pull down menu, and move your cursor over Control Charts. You'll see all your options; in this case, we have data for an XMR Chart.

So, I will select XMR, the macro will run, and it will prompt me for my chart titles. I can just click ok or I can type whatever I want in there that was for the arranged chart.

Now, for the X chart, you'll see I get my center line, my sigma zones, and then any unstable points or conditions are turned red.

Another feature in our Control Chart macros is you can show a process change on a chart. So in this case, it looks like we've got a downward trend, I can select the point where I think the change occurred, go to the pull down menu, select show process change on chart, and I'll get a set of before and after control limits.

Next, what I want to do is rerun my stability analysis to show whether or not for instance these points are unstable with this new set of limits.

So, I go back up to the pull down menu and say analyze stability, and it will rerun stability analysis on the data points with the new limits.

One other feature in our QI Macros, is if you don't know which Control Chart to select, you can simply click and drag over your data, click on the QI Macros pulldown menu, and select the Control Chart Wizard. It will look at your data and determine which is the correct chart to run and will run the chart for you.
