Deadly Dancing

"Dancing in the Spirit" and "shouting" are familiar concepts for Pentecostals. Most of us grew up defining "a really good service" as a "shouting service." But have we ever stopped and asked where shouting came from? What is its history? How has it developed? It's time to find out.

Today's story dates back to a frontier campmeeting in 1804. It was originally penned by the Methodist evangelist, Peter Cartwright. He tells us of how uncontrollable "jerking" would seize both the sinners and the saints in his congregations. Even though the jerking was thought to be divine, this early form of "shouting" wasn't entirely welcome at the meetings. Cartwright's remedy was fervent prayer, but in this story, one stubborn congregant refused to take him up on it. Cartwright also talks about "the running, barking, jumping exercise," as well as the rise of dreamers and end-time prophets. His insight and warnings about these new visionaries and the eschatological ideas they introduced are still relevant today.
