There are different temperature sensors in modern vehicles. They serve as air, fuel or cooling water temperature sensors. Modern temperature sensors record the temperatures electronically.
The temperature sensor is structured as follows:
In a housing, a made of semiconductor material measuring resistor is installed.
The semiconductor material is a material having a negative temperature coefficient. It is therefore also called an NTC resistor. A negative temperature coefficient means that the resistance decreases as the temperature increases.
Analogous to the resistance, the voltage drop at the NTC decreases with increasing temperature.
The verification of a temperature sensor can be done either with a voltage meter or a resistance meter.
If the measurement with a voltmeter from pin 5 to pin 4 indicates a defined voltage, for example 5 volts, it will drop to a lower value as the temperature rises. The voltage drop across the NTC becomes smaller because the resistance decreases as the temperature increases.
If the resistance is to be measured directly, the plug connection on the sensor must first be disconnected. The resistance meter measures the resistance directly at pin 4 against pin 5.
The resistance values are then compared with the manufacturer's specifications.
