Strumming and singing at the same time is the FASTEST way to make your music practical for the people around you. That's why I put learning how to sing and strum near the top of the list for guitar players, ukulele players, piano and keyboard players, or anyone with an instrument that is played with the hands.

Least Expensive on my list. 1/2 size. Comes with a kit. The only “it lives in the truck” guitar on this list, because it’s not made of wood. But people seem to love them. Being an owner of plenty of wooden kick-around guitars, I would buy this one if I bought anything. They say it’s so robust that you can use it to paddle a canoe.

YAMAHA FD01S ($189.99)
Least expensive “solid spruce top” guitar that I’m aware of (avoid laminate or ‘layered’ tops, I’d take carbon fiber over a laminate wood top). Yamaha’s have a reputation for sounding great but not feeling great in the hands, although there are enthusiasts who might take offense at that.

Fender CD-60S or CC-60S ($199)
Solid Mahogany top guitars are LOUD, perfect for playing outside. I don’t love the Fender brand for acoustics, but there’s nothing wrong with them. Almost certainly I would pick one of these over the Yamaha if I tried them side by side, regardless of price.

Ibanez 54ce ($329.99)
Cutaway dreadnought with an onboard preamp for plugging in acoustic/electric. Solid Mahogany top. I played one of these in my local guitar center and I liked it better than any other guitar in the room under $2000. This is a guitar you’ll never grow out of, even when you do own better ones.
