Excel SMALL function | Find second, third, n-th smallest number | Excel One Minute Quick Reference

The SMALL function in Excel returns the k-th smallest value in a data set. For example, you can use SMALL to return the customer with the lowest revenue, 2nd lowest revenue, third-lowest revenue, and so on. Another example is to use the SMALL function to see the lowest test score, 2nd lowest test score, and the third-lowest test score. You would use the SMALL Function to show the best golf scores. The SMALL function has two arguments. Both arguments are required.

Array Required. The array or range of data for which you want to determine the k-th smallest value.
K Required. The position (from the smallest) in the array or cell range of data to return.
=SMALL(array,k)
=SMALL(B2:B10,2) to find the second-lowest value

What about duplicate values in the SMALL Function?
With duplicate values, SMALL will return the duplicate value multiple times. For example, the numbers 10, 8, 8, 4, and 4.

SMALL 1 will be 4.
SMALL 2 will be 4 since it is in the data range twice.
SMALL 3 will be 8.
SMALL 4 will also return 8.

The way to get around this is by using the MIN function with the IF Function as an array function.
