Decoding Union Budget 2023-24

"India is recovering from the pandemic and the country has emerged as the fastest-growing economy in the world. Under these circumstances, the budget has done a remarkable job", stated Dr Charan Singh, Non-Executive Chairman of Punjab & Sind Bank in a webinar on 'Decoding Union Budget 2023-24' conducted by Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) on 2nd February 2023. Dr Charan Singh was in conversation with Dr D Dhanuraj, Chairman, CPPR and Ms Anu Maria Francis, Research Associate, CPPR. Dr Dhanuraj opined that the Government is confident about their re-election and that it is visible from their budget which has touched upon every single aspect from youth, MSME, infrastructure, AI, Green Energy transitioning, tribals, women empowerment, and taxation. Various aspects of the Union Budget were briefly discussed by the panelists.

The Government's path to fiscal consolidation is continuing unabated with this budget 2023-24. The government is thinking of a futuristic approach while providing continuity of the past in this budget through strengthening sectors which will provide a multi-generational effect.

Countries can only become clean and smart when the people decide to become clean and smart, hence strengthening the local bodies can be a great decision. But before that we should first experiment with the RURBAN model fully in order to truly strengthen our local bodies.

The government has been quite clear with its intention to promote and boost the multi-cropping system in our agriculture sector with nutrition, food security, and farmer's independence at its core.

India has paid emphasis to renewable energy over the last 7-8 years immensely, and the country has taken a lead in decreasing its carbon footprint. India’s digital growth and digital mission will further be a positive move toward climate change.

India needs to build its military capability in tanks, ships, helicopters, submarines and all other arms and ammunition to become a greater power in the world.
