Automating Powerwall using Raspberry PI and Python

In this video I’m going to talk about how we create an automated power wall schedule to deal with multiple peaks in time of use plans. Our SRP plan uses a winter double peak starting November 1st, of 5am-9am and 5pm-9pm. Since the Tesla software does not out of the box have a way to schedule for double peaks we use Raspberry Pi and python scripting to achieve this. We will walk over the setup of the Raspberry pi, how we use the python scripts and how to create the schedule cron table to automate the scripting.

Recently we had used our Tesla power wall gateway local REST interface but that interface was closed down because Tesla now requires toggling power to enter installer mode which defeats automation. For now we’ll use the cloud api via python scripting instead of the local interface.

Note: In the video I may run ‘sudo crontab -e’, it should not be using sudo, it should just be ‘crontab -e’, this ensures the cron table is only run for the pi user, which is correct way.
