It works by charging electrical plates positively and negatively and those charged ion plates will attract and disable some odors, smoke, and some pollution. Some other popular models are ionic breeze air tower - not on the market anymore because tower that would basically attract the molecules on these plates. You could pull them out and clean them. The Oreck XL air ionizer purifier works the same way - it's really just an air ionizer purifier and its similarly had these metal plates where air will pass through and it would attract any molecules that had a positive or negative charge.So it doesn't attract everything. Then you have the alive air purifier which uses air ionization as just stage 2 of the nine stages of purification. It looks more like a gridl but they all basically do the same thing, and they're all washable. So it's good for odor, smoke and air pollution. There are thousands of air ionizer purifiers and besides those three brands you'll find most of them are pretty inexpensive. Except the oreck air ionizer is very expensive at $350 and it's really just an ionizer. Then you have the Ionic Breezer just taken off the market, and the alive air purifier which ia at 299 dollars, but it also includes HEPA, UV, tio2 and other forms of purification and then there are many many no-name brands of ionizers, even plug-in ionizers. What are some other pros of air ionizer purifiers well first of all it does kill mold and pollution, its relatively inexpensive at least it should be. Many are three or four hundred dollars. For an ionizer that’s overpriced but it's good for smoke so if you are a smoker air ionization is a good really inexpensive way to kill smoke becauses a lot of the things in smoke will be attracted to the ionizer plates and it's washable so you never have to change the filter. Some cons are - it’s not really good for dust, it's not really good for pollen because it doesn’t grab or hold dust or pollen like a HEPA filter would for example. It’s not effective for allergies. My rating on ionizer air purifiers is a C-plus because it doesn’t really clean or purify the air effectively. My suggestion is find an air purifier that has HEPA, UV along with ionization. Use ionization as a secondary technology.
