Microservice API Patterns: A Language for API Design

Many APIs share functional and design elements that in the end must be incorporated into the technical design. But much earlier than that, in many cases it already can be discussed that the capability that is being designed should have certain properties. One of the challenges of API design then is to translate those properties in a concrete API design.
Many of these properties (such as the ability to page through a number of results) are present in many APIs, and the question is how to identify them, how to discuss them, and how to find the best way to incorporate them into the API design.
In this conversation with Daniel Lübke, one of the co-creators of Microservice API Patterns (MAP), we talk about MAP and how it can help API designers to establish a shared language, and how MAP also helps with finding good solutions for their API design tasks. Daniel demonstrates the site, walks us through the categories of patterns available, and also discusses how each pattern is documented.
MAP can be useful for API novices as well as for more advanced practitioners. For novices, just looking at the patters provides a good overview of the various aspects of the overall API design spectrum. For advanced practitioners, there still may be some patterns in there that they have not (yet) encountered in their design practice, and which they can add to their arsenal of good practices.
