WordPress Basics: Editing Content in WordPress

Hi my name is Miles and I will be showing you in these videos how to maintain and edit you website which is running on the Open Source Content management System WordPress. My current installation will be running the latest version WordPress 3.9.1, however the concepts in this tutorial should remain the same no matter what version you have. If things don't look the same to you, you may be using a different version.

In this video I will how to edit pages and how to add images and multimedia into your WordPress content.

To edit an existing page go to Pages - All Pages. Here you will see a list of all the pages that make up your site. Typically the name of the page in WordPress will correspond to the title on the page you want to edit.

If I open a page it will open the page editor.

This editor should look familiar. It is exactly the same editor we used for editing a post except for the categories and tags. You will see some options for editing the page template and parent on the right, but typically this is only something a developer will need to use.

One difference you may notice on a page however is the "permalink" under the title. The permalink is simply the URL of the page. Posts also have permalinks, but they are dynamically created based on which category they are assigned to. Pages however have static permalinks that will not change unless you want them to be different. To edit the page permalink, click the yellow
area and change the ending to whatever you would like. pages are hierarchal so the location will always be after the parent page. In this case history is a child of who we are.

If you change the permalink make sure to click OK then update the page to save.

In either posts or pages you will probably want to spice things up a bit and add images or video.

To add an image, you will first need to upload it. You can do this by going to Add Media and simply dragging the image file into the browser screen. It will turn blue to indicate it is going to work.

If your image is already uploaded and on the site you can use it by going to media library clicking it and inserting into page.

Once the image is in the content area you can do some cool things with it to help with formatting. This area above the content editor is the formatting pallet. You have all the basic tools to edit images and text that you might recognize including a couple you might not such as creating a link like this.

And making text or images left, center or right justified. If you left or right justify an image, the text will wrap around it.

If you find that your image is too large or small when you add it in, you can change the size by percentage by clicking it and using the edit button.

Here you will find a lot of useful information to edit about the image, but specifically you can change the size proportionally.

To add a video in you simply need to add the embed code in text mode. I will show you how to do that now.

To preview your page before saving changes just click preview changes.
