How Does Crash & Smash Work?

In this video, Joe discusses Crash & Smash and how it is used with Alarm.com. Crash & Smash is an advanced technology that allows a central monitoring station to know to send emergency dispatch if the alarm panel is destroyed during a break-in. It is a useful feature for keeping end users protected.

Without Crash & Smash technology, it would be a serious problem if an alarm system was destroyed during a break-in. But today, most alarm systems offer some type of this feature. The way that Crash & Smash works is that a signal is immediately sent out to Alarm.com whenever a system activity occurs while the system is armed. The could include that a zone is faulted or a sensor has been tampered with. By receiving this signal, Alarm.com knows that either the system must be disarmed or an alarm event will occur.

But if the system is destroyed, then neither of these events will occur. The only way for this to happen is for the system to be destroyed. Alarm.com will recognize this and know that emergency dispatch is needed. The basic understanding is that if a sensor is activated while the system is armed, then logically, system disarm or an alarm event must follow. So with Crash & Smash, even if the system is destroyed and no disarm or alarm event occurs, the user can still receive emergency dispatch.

Please note that Crash & Smash can only be used with Alarm.com Systems that are actively connected with a central monitoring station. Being set up with a central monitoring station is the only way for a user to receive automatic emergency dispatch. If the system is not set up with a central station, then Alarm.com will not be able to request automatic emergency dispatch for the user. Additionally, Honeywell Systems use a similar feature to Crash & Smash. However, Honeywell refers to this practice as Advanced Protection Logic, or APL.
