After updating a web page, one of the most frequent questions we get asked by clients is why they can’t see the updates. 9.9 times out of 10, this is simply due to their browser cache needing flushed.

The Browser Cache

Every browser has a folder in which temporary files that have been downloaded from a web site are stored for future use. When visiting a web page, the browser checks this folder to see if a file is in the cache already, and if so, the visitor does not have to re-download the file(s), and the web page they are visiting will load faster.

The Simple Refresh

Refreshing a browser reloads the web page while still using the old files from the cache, which doesn’t really help us in this situation, since the user will still be seeing the old files.

Flush It!

So, the user needs to flush their browser cache in order to clean out the old files so that the new version can be downloaded, so that changes can be seen.

Instructions

Following are step-by-step guides on how to clear the browser cache and force a browser to download all the latest data from a website. We’ve listed the steps for the latest versions of the most popular desktop and mobile web browsers. The steps are slightly different for older browser versions, so feel free to contact us directly if you need help.

MAC

Safari

From your menu bar click Safari.
Click Preferences.
Select the Advanced tab.
Check Show Develop menu in menu bar.
Now from the menu bar there is a new Develop menu. Click this and then Empty Caches. Your browser cache is now empty.

Firefox

Click on Firefox in the menubar (top left).
Click Preferences.
Click on the Advanced tab.
Click on the Network tab.
In the Cached Web Content section, click Clear Now. Your browser cache is now empty.

Chrome

Click on the three dashes icon in the top right corner of the browser.
Click Settings.
Click History in the menu on the left.
Click Clear browsing data…
Choose the beginning of time from the drop down menu.
Check Cached images and files.
Click on Clear browsing data. Your browser cache is now empty.


iOS

Safari

From the home screen; tap Settings.
Choose Safari.
Scroll down and click Clear History and Website Data.
Click Clear History and Website Data again in the overlay. Your browser cache is now empty.

Chrome

Click the menu button (three bars in the topright corner).
Click Settings in the menu.
Click Privacy.
Click Clear cache.
Confirm the action by clicking on Clear Cache again. Your browser cache is now empty.
Click Done to exit the settings page.
