GitHub tutorial 04: Preparation - Install Git смотреть онлайн

I am using Windows 10 operating system. For daily use of GitHub, I prefer typing Git commands in Command Prompt on PC, not through web browser. There are other options, like GitHub Desktop. You can explore those options after have learned the basics.
First, check if Git has been installed on your computer. Open Command Prompt from Start Menu Search, or press Windows key and "R" key to open “Run” box, then type “cmd”.
In Command Prompt, enter command "git". If Git is not installed, you will get the message like: 'git' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

What you need to do is to download the latest Git from this link: https://git-scm.com/downloads. At the time of this recording, the latest Git version is 2.21.0. If you are also using Windows, click "Windows" to download the installation file. For 64-bit system, the downloaded file is Git-2.21.0-64-bit.exe. The size is around 45 MB. Double-click to run it. Click Next to accept all the default settings.

Here are the steps:
- select components
- choose the default editor used by Git
- adjust PATH environment
- choose HTTPS transport backend
- configure the line ending conversions
- configure the terminal emulator to use with Git Bash
- configure extra options

Click "Install".

At the end, click "Finish".

By the way, if you watched closely during installation, you may have noticed that Unix or Linux Vim editor is also installed by default. It's used to edit comments for commitment and you don't need to install it separately. The significant part is that you need to know several simple commands to use Vim properly, which I will show you later in the tutorial.

After installation, let's perform some basic check in Command Prompt. At prompt, type "git" and press Enter. Now you will see some useful message. Most of the commands we will use in the following tutorials are listed here.

To check which version, type "git --version". The Git version will show up. It should match the version you downloaded from Git website.

That's it. We have successfully installed Git on our computer. Next we will start using Git to work with GitHub.
