Hello and welcome to this video giving you an overview of the WordPress dashboard. The best way to get access to the WordPress back end and obviously the dashboard that we need to look at is type in your domain name/wp-admin. Okay? If your domain name is rockclimber.com then you would type in www.rockclimber.com/wp-admin. This will bring you to this screen here. Once you have this screen enter your username and password and this will take you through to the admin area.

Welcome to the WordPress dashboard. This is the back end of your blog and this is how you control all aspects of your website including plug ins, themes, appearance and posts and pages and everything else. What we're going to do is I'm going to give you an overview of the dashboard and show you some of the features and some of the things that you can do with it.

Starting in the top left here we have the WordPress logo. Drop down menu here, it gives you the WordPress home site, documentation, support forms, and feedback. Next to it is our home site. This will take us through to the front end of our website. This link will always be here and the name of the website's here. I haven't changed the name, it says my blog at the moment, but when you change the name it will change accordingly there too.

Next is updates. According to this we have one update that we need to do. Any updates that are available, they will be listed here giving you a quick link to the updates section so you can perform them. Next to that is comments. Any comments you have on your posts, it will give a number up here to let you know that there are comments and that you need to reply to them. Next to that is the news so you have the plus sign with new giving you the option to a new post, new media, a new page, or a new user. It's basically a quick link menu so you don't have to go hunting through this main menu down the side here. You can do it all on the top bar here.

Over to the right-hand side is our login area. This takes us to the admin area, our profile, and enables us to log out. Heading to the side bar here we have all the tools, options and settings that we will be using to change and modify our website. This is really your main menu. When you hover the mouse over these options on the left-hand side here you are met with sub-menus with a range of options related to that initial main option. We have post media, pages, comments, appearance, plug ins, users, tools, and settings. All of which will be covered in the subsequent lectures.

This is really how you go about modifying your website and is the basics of what you need. There will be additional options added as you insert plug ins, themes, and all the other kind of things that you want to add to your website, making this menu quite substantial. If you want to collapse this menu and give yourself some more real estate on the main work area here, you can do that by hitting the collapse menu option at the bottom.

Heading over into the main area here, we are met at the very top with our screen options. Screen options allows you to select what you want to be able to see on your screen. If we click activity it will disappear, quick draft, it will disappear. We can select as in what we want to see here. As you install more plug ins and more facilities for your website, say you often have Google analytics and a few other things on here, it can get kind of crowded on here, as well as other theme options and things like that. Being able to choose what you want here is very handy because you can then slim things down and make it just to what you want to look at.

Alongside the screen options is a help tab. This is very handy for people just starting out. It has documentation for the dashboard, support forums, navigation, layout, and content. It gives you information on all of them and makes for a good read as well. Be sure to check that out. If you do get stuck, that's always there ready to help you out with whatever you need and whatever topics you get stuck on.
