How to Dormant / Spring Prune Summer Bearing Raspberries смотреть онлайн

In this video I demonstrate how I dormant prune my summer bearing raspberries. Dormant pruning raspberries is usually done in the spring, but it can be done any time when the plant is dormant. Something I forgot to mention in this video is that I have summer pruned my raspberries the previous summer. That was done when I pruned put the fruiting canes after they had finished fruiting. That is often done in the summer, but it could be done at the same time as the pruning done in this video. The only difference would have been that I pruned the raspberry canes that fruited last year at the same time as pruning the dead canes. The next thing I would have done would be to prune the row to a width of no more than 12" to 18". I would prune the width of the row to make sure that the patch is not too wide because if it's too wide, it might limit the air flow to canes in the middle. If canes in middle don't get enough air flow, you could end up with mold or fungus problems and the canes in the middle might not get enough light. After pruning for width, I prune out dead canes. These are canes that likely died due to winter cold or other possible factors. In the video I show how I identify dead canes. I used the more grey colour of dead canes, the wrinkled appearance, and the lack of bud development. The next thing I prune is the canes that are small and spindly. I eliminate those canes because they likely won't be able to support much weight or produce many berries, so those canes are cut off low to the ground. The next thing I prune is related to overcrowding. I want to prune out the canes until there is only about 1 can every 4" to 6". Part of the selection for this is to look for the strongest canes, and when there is overcrowding, the weaker canes are pruned out. After pruning out canes at the bottom, I will prune the tips of canes. They are pruned to a height of between 4 feet and 5.5 feet as a general rule. As a method I am just looking at the canes, and as the canes get thinner going up in height, I prune the cane when I think the cane is not going to be strong or thick enough to hold the weight of a lot of berries. The final pruning that I did was to eliminate canes that are crossing. In some cases I will tie canes to the trellis rather than prune them if tying the canes to the trellis can eliminate the crossing. Crossing and rubbing canes can be a problem because it can be a source of injury for the canes and a way that fungus, mold, or other problems can get into the raspberry canes.
