Hyundai Merchant Marine starts strategic alliance with Korea's two local shipping firms
현대상선, 근해선사와 '3각 협력체' 구성... 업계 최초
Setting their pride aside, three of Korea's major shipping lines are joining forces.
According to our Oh Jung-hee, the strategic alliance involving Hyundai Merchant Marine will be a clear win-win as they will get cut cost while expanding further in the global market.
Korea's major shipping line, Hyundai Merchant Marine, announced on Tuesday that it is forming a joint consortium with its two local rivals... Sinokor Merchant Marine and Heung-A Shipping.
This is the first time in the country a strategic alliance is forged between a shipping line operating in a global network and two firms covering nearby regions.
A memorandum of understanding was signed on Tuesday... and the joint consortium, named HMM+K2, is to officially start in March.
Through the alliance, the firms expect to further share ships and container equipment as well as to make joint investments into shipping infrastructure.
Hyundai Merchant Marine will be able to make use of the shipping routes to and from China, Japan, and South East Asia in general,... currently owned by Sinokor Merchant Marine and Heung-A Shipping,... while the latter two will be able to cut down their costs and improve the overall quality of their shipping services.
Hyundai also hopes to provide the other two with idle cargo freight spaces... offering opportunities for them to grow as global shipping firms.
The three companies are also planning to establish new routes to other countries.
Amid the current low growth in Korea's shipping industry, experts say such strategic alliance could help boost the competitiveness of domestic shipping firms.
"Foreign companies' check on Korean shipping firms is getting harsher, causing Korean firms to see their position in the industry weaken. So Hyundai Merchant Marine's efforts to cooperate with local firms -- which have established routes to Asian countries -- can be a great leap forward for Hyundai in expanding its global influence, as well as a chance for Korea's shipping industry to enhance its competitiveness."
