The Marfo-Mariinsky Convent is one of seven Stavropegic Convents of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Moscow metropolis.
The monastery was founded by Grand Duchess Elizaveta Feodorovna, the elder sister of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, the wife of Emperor Nicholas II.
On June 3, 1884, the Great Church of the Winter Palace Elizaveta was married to the Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, brother of the Russian Emperor Alexander III.
After the assassination of her husband, the Moscow Governor-General of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich , she repudiated social life and sold her valuables, donating some of them to the treasury and relatives. The proceeds went to the creation of the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent, which was founded in 1909.
After the revolution of 1917, the Mossovet Commission for the Protection of Monuments of Art and Antiquities was established. In the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent, the interior of the Intercession Church, mosaics, icons and Nesterov’s paintings were subject to protection.
Due to her connection with the Romanov dynasty, Elizaveta Feodorovna was arrested on May 7, 1918 and was sent to Perm, followed by Yekaterinburg. On the night of July 18, 1918, Elizaveta Feodorovna was thrown into the Novaya Selimskaya mine alive, together with other members of the Imperial family , 18 kilometers from the city. In October of the same year, the White Guards took her remains and had them transported to Shanghai, from where they were taken by ferry to Jerusalem...
In 1992, the Grand Duchess Elizaveta was canonized by the Bishops' Council of the Russian Orthodox Church and incorporated into the Council of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia ...
