Brandenburg Concerto #2 in F major, BWV 1047 0:06 Allegro 5:35 Andante 8:52 Allegro assai The Second "Brandenburg" Concerto is likely the most frequently performed work by Johann Sebastian Bach in the modern era. Yet in his lifetime, it was hardly noticed as a work of any importance. The man to whom Bach dedicated this autographed copy of six concerti, Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt, was probably not a connoisseur of fine music and failed to appreciate the monumental gift he had been bestowed. Also, he may not have had an instrumental complement that could execute such a complicated work of music. Bach's collection disappeared for more than a century but amazingly reappeared unblemished in the early 18th Century. It is a purely secular work from his early traveling years that appeared long before his massive output of church cantatas and his offering of grand oratorios for the congregation of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Despite its obscure beginnings, a recording of the first Allegro movement from this Concerto (along with many other recordings) was etched onto a gold plated disk and mounted onto the side of NASA's Voyager I spacecraft; and thus, a piece of music thoroughly neglected at its inception has come to symbolize humanity’s accomplishments in the vastness and eternity of space. Similar to some of Vivaldi's concerti, this Bach masterpiece contains more than one solo instrumentalist. The 4 solo instruments are trumpet, recorder (or flute), violin and oboe - each taking turns performing its own virtuosic lines. For this recording, I downloaded MIDI files from IMSLP.com (compiled and uploaded by Michel Rondeau) and tweaked the sounds of each instrument using the Music Studio 2 app on the iPhone. In this latest rendition, I altered the individual instrumental patches to achieve a more archaic sonority, adjusted the reverb, slowed the tempo, reshaped the trills, added in the dynamic markings that Bach recommended and rebalanced the instruments to highlight the solo passages. For the video, I cropped the entirely of Bach's original score from a facsimile. My arrangement is as follows: 4 solo parts (alto recorder, clarino trumpet, oboe d'amore, solo violin), harpsichord, 2 violins I, 2 violins 2, 1 violas, 1 cellos and 1 double bass.
