Back in 1999 work got underway to lift the world's largest Ferris wheel into place on the south bank of the Thames in London. The first stage of the operation to raise the 435ft wheel is expected to take 16 hours and will change the London skyline.
When fully erect the £35m British Airways London Eye, known as the Ferris wheel will dwarf Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament on the opposite bank, and become the fourth tallest structure in London. Only the Post Office Tower, the NatWest Tower and Canary Wharf will be taller.
But as remarkable as the views the wheel will afford is the task of lifting the 1,500-tonne structure from its current position, resting on eight temporary islands in the Thames.
In a two-stage operation the multi-spoked steel structure will be hauled up to a 65-degree angle, the supporting structure restrained and secured, before stage two, in which the wheel will be raised to the vertical.
The key to the lift is a giant yellow A-frame, effectively the world's largest crane, which stands on the wheel's intended plinth in Jubilee Gardens. Over 130 cables run from the apex of the crane to the hub and spokes of the wheel, and four giant hydraulic jacks, each with gripping jaws, will grasp the cables and, instructed by computer, haul for 15 inches. The cables will then be secured before the grips move forward and haul again.
Gradually the wheel, which is attached to its own permanent supporting leg, will begin to rise above the Thames.
