In 2019, I spent the summer working in Phoenix, Arizona. With few rock climbing and Ninja Warrior gyms in the area and no means of transportation, I resorted to training parkour outdoors--in the scorching heat. The temperature consistently exceeded 115˚F, even in the evenings after work! Within a few grueling weeks, I grew accustomed to the endless buckets of sweat and swarms of mosquitos. With only 3 months before my return to the Bay, I scoped out 9 difficult challenges that were just out of my reach, but still feasible with enough preparation and training. Some were more dubious than others, but after weeks of training and dozens of attempts, I accomplished all of them! The 9 challenges (plus 1 bonus), ordered by success date, were: 1. 2:06 A precision double kong across the two thin edges of a planter, with a curb impeding the run-up. It took me multiple sessions over a month to build up the courage to commit. Despite my success, I had to repeat the mental preparation process in subsequent sessions; by the end of summer, however, I was very comfortable with it. 2. 1:39 Strides across uneven curbs to a long pre. At the beginning of summer, my legs couldn't generate the momentum to stride into the running pre. After drilling long strides elsewhere, I returned to achieve this jump. 3. 2:09 A dive kong across the same planter from the double kong. With the curb in front of the planter, I had to block with one foot on the curb and one foot off. Although the dive kong was scarier to commit to, it was far easier to repeat than the double kong due to the safer bail. 4. 2:11 This was one of the toughest lines I have ever done. Every single move required extensive mental preparation: the turn vault on the second floor, parking gargage descent, cat 360, turn vault wall spin, and even the Italian job and gate vault, which were difficult to connect with the wall spin. The first time I completed the line (0:48), it was choppy and clumsy, but I got 3.5 rips on both hands, so I had to call it. However, I challenged myself to clean it up, and 25 days later, I quickly recovered all of the moves to produce a very smooth line. 5. 1:03 My max standing pre, 10.33 foot sizes. I racked up at least 50 attempts over the course of 1.5 months, each time just barely bouncing off. But perseverance pays off. On 8/11, I cleared the distance, and furthermore, I got a (kind of) clean stick afterwards! Even though I couldn't repeat the feat after that day, I am still immensely thrilled with this goal, possibly my favorite thing from that summer. I wasn't even certain I would succeed before I left, so 2 triumphs was plenty. 6. 1:43 This was a very rapid line, with every move flowing into the next. I kept adding elements to it, from the tac off the fire hydrant to the stride over the bushes to the roll into doubleleg. I succeeded once with the tac barely in frame, but I was kicked off before I could refilm the line. 7. 2:35 For this line, I had to get tac wall spin on concrete, although that was the easy part. I practiced for several weeks to connect the tac wall spin to the wall run. In addition, I had to revise the line to substitute out moves I couldn't do, such as cat wall spin and ground kong to frontflip. Neither of my successes was perfect, with the first having a wall run right out of the tac wall spin and a better b-twist, but the second having a better climb-up and descent and clearer angle on the b-twist. In the end, I decided to include both in the video at the expense of more confusion for the viewer. B-twist on concrete in the dark out of the scoot variation was surprisingly scary. 7.5. 1:13 Bonus challenge! It was the first line I spotted when I arrived in Phoenix, but because of the concrete frontflip, I pushed it to the end of the queue. After finishing the previous line with some remaining daylight, I scoped out this run--and realized I had the physical ability to do it. Although I had to break concrete fronts, I'm very pleased that I was able to commit! When I first committed, I put a hand down to avoid careening onto nearby broken glass, but afterwards, I was too exhausted to repeat the line; still, one victory is enough for me. 8. 1:07 Even after having broken fronts from height a couple weeks prior, I couldn't commit to this front because of the large stride before it. Only after more than half an hour of progressions and mental preparation did I throw the front, but once I did, I only needed 2 additional attempts to clean it up. The distance is fairly large, and I challenged myself to stride into the front oppo with my left leg. 9. 1:10 This was another challenge for which I wasn't certain whether I had the physical strength to land. Both jumps were individually doable, but I didn't have the power to take the plyo drop and still hit the pre.
