Boz Scaggs - Miss Sun (’つくば '85 Live)

This would have been an awesome video even without the personal connection. But the personal connection makes it pure awesomeness for me.

I was fortunate enough to have been introduced to Boz Scaggs' music in the late '70s, when I was still a kid. As I was discovering jazz and blues, his music just resonated with me. Even as a youngster.

Fast forward to 1985. By this point, Boz Scaggs' talents were evident to all and he truly was a superstar. Not at the level of Michael Jackson, but still very popular. And that was true in Japan. Where fans had a real appreciation for his talent.

So, Boz Scaggs was on tour in Japan, doing some shows in Tokyo at the legendary Budokan. And it was arranged for him to do a live show at Tsukuba Expo '85 on March 17th, which was opening day of the Expo. I think his whole tour to Japan was built around this event, but don't know for sure.

I was living in Tsukuba at the time. A high school student that was well-plugged in because there were only a few of us foreigners living in Tsukuba who were high school students. Because of being in Tsukuba and being foreigner high schoolers, we got access to so much during the run-up to the Expo. We got to wander the site while it was still under construction, to see what was being built. So, of course, when opening day came, we had VIP passes to get in.

And we had VIP passes to the concert that day. Mind you, we were supposed to be on our way to Tokyo for school the next day. But we managed to persuade our parents to let us stay and take the first train out in the morning.

Which allowed us to watch this show by Boz Scaggs. On a cold March evening!! What an awesome show it was! Boz Scaggs and all those performing were just spectacular!!

What a memory!!
