How to cook ultra light food in the back country. When you're camping out after a long hike you are often eating very basic dehydrated meals. By carrying only dry food you can greatly reduce the weight of your backpack. We have been planning to share this camping food recipe ever since we published a recent video about dried meat. In future we hope to make more of our campfire cooking videos.
BACK COUNTRY GRUB
In Australia the term 'backcountry' refers to remote areas of the alps where few people go. 'Pub grub' is English slang meaning, basic food that is served in a bar. While filming this video we decided to name the recipe Back Country Grub. We feel this recipe name is very suitable and hope it can become a widely used term in Australian bush walking. The Beef Bourguignon freeze dried meal pouch, is made by The Outdoor Gourmet Company. These meal pouches cost about $14US in Australia.
INGREDIENTS
190gm Beef Bourguignon dehydrated food pouch (or any similar dehydrated meal pouch)
500gms of beef
700ml of boiling water
50gm dehydrated peas
200gm pasta
1 teaspoon of salt
RECIPE
We always start by boiling a full billy of water in our 1400ml Snow Peak pot. Add 700ml of boiling water and the 50gm of dehydrated peas to the meal pouch. Mix the ingredients together with a long spoon. Once your meat is fully cooked also add it into the meal pouch and stir it in. At this stage you may need to add slightly more water if necessary. Seal up the meal pouch and stand for about 10 minutes or more. Cook your pasta, open your meal pouch and now mix all ingredients together into a stew. In the video you can see we use our larger cook-set pots for the final mixing. Add your teaspoon of salt, we also usually add about half a teaspoon of black pepper. Play back our video to see more!
