Fuga The Black Watch Window Emmanuel Vukovich - violin Jean-Paul Desjardins - audio & video Jonathan Oldengarm - photo Through these performances, this project will explore the relationship between the various tonal colours, characters, and themes found within Bach's solo violin Sonatas & Partitas, with the colours, themes, and stories found in the stained glass windows of The Church of St Andrew and St Paul. The Black Watch Window The Black Watch Memorial Window above the chancel is dedicated in proud remembrance of Lt.-Col. Bartlett McLennan and men of 42nd Battalion R.H.C. “They sought the glory of their country. They see the glory of God.” The window was designed by the well-known British firm of J Ballantine & Co, Edinburgh, which made many of the windows in the church. It was originally installed in The Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul when it was situated on Dorchester Streer, Montreal, where it was unveiled on the 13th of November 1921 by Lt.-Gen. Sir Arthur W. Currie, the former Canadian Corps Commander. It was transferred to the present church on the corner of Redpath and Sherbrooke Streets in 1931-32. In the centre of the window is a figure of Christ, a Celtic figure with a youthful face, radiant and victorious in the life of humanity. Beside him on the left (facing the window) is the figure of David holding the head of Goliath and on the right the figure of St Andrew holding the emblematic cross of Scotland. In the left panel is the figure of a crusader in medieval armour with a shield and a sheathed sword; beneath it are the emblems of the cross and the crown of thorns. In the righthand panel is a figure of a modern crusader, a private soldier of the 42nd Battalion of the regiment in full battle array armed with a rifle and fixed bayonet; beneath it is the regimental badge.
